Fares to downtown Munich: Taxi $55; Metro $10. From Franz Josef Strauss Airport there's an S-Bahn No. 8 connection between 4am - 1am that departs for downtown Munich every 20 minutes. Several stops are made on the way to the city's central Hauptbahnhof (train station). The trip takes 20 minutes. |

| | Munich has a marvelous subway system known as the U-Bahn; it covers the inner-city efficiently...and soundlessly. A single ticket or Einzelkarte, valid for both the U-Bahn and S-Bahn (which covers the outer suburban areas) costs $1.50. But as with most European subways, we suggest purchasing discount passes such as the 24-hour Tageskarte ticket which costs $5 or a Mehrfahrkarte - a strip ticket good for 10 rides at $8. |

| | It is best in Munich, we believe, to stick with the U-Bahn but the buses and streetcars are useful to suburban areas. Your U-Bahn and S-bahn tickets are valid on buses and streetcars. Karlsplatz is the main streetcar terminal; Ostbahnhof for buses. |

| | Unless you are rushing to an appointment at an unknown destination, stay with Munich's terrific public transport system. Taxis are quite expensive. |
