While many of the Caribbean's historic "Greathouses" have by now settled into quaint but undistinguished inns, St. Kitts' Fairview Inn (the island's first hotel) is a standout - a truly genuine, Colonial ambience combined with lovely country & garden scenery and easy access to the beaches as well as to Basseterre. Built by the French in 1701 and lovingly cared for, as an Inn, by Mr. & Mrs. Fred Lam since 1968, the Fairview 's 30 rustic cottages (some renovations are planned) surround a fresh water pool and enchanting Garden Bar. Our recent lunch at Fairview confirmed its reputation for fine dining, accented by West Indian fare and delicious ice-creams (ours was peanut!).
