| Picturesque rural
village and site of an inspiring 16th century Oratorio.
Built by Augustine monks, this site is as much a
religious "picture book" for the indigenous neighbors
as well as a spiritual center. Every inch of aged
wall is covered with biblical scenes. Atotonilco
is also the destination of pilgrimages or "peregrinaciones"
when lines of the devoted arrive after days of walking,
symbolically doing penance. Addr: 9 miles north
of San Miguel de Allende on the road to Dolores
Hidalgo. |
