Excursions From Oaxaca

Archeological Sites

The environs surrounding Oaxaca contain some of the most magnificent ruins of bygone pre-Hispanic civilizations. Monte Alban: The ancient Zapotec capital that flourished from 500 BC to 800 AD, has at its center a spectacular, flattened mountaintop with Grand Plaza, Ball Curt, Observatory, palaces, tombs and immense temples to explore. Located 5 miles from Oaxaca and reached by bus from the Hotel Meson del Angel. Mitla: Originally a Zapotec stronghold but primarily a Mixtec ceremonial site adorned with geometric patterns and a curious lack of human and animal figures. 25 miles from Oaxaca and reached by bus from the Second-Class Bus Terminal. Yagul: With many of the same structures as Monte Alban, just on a smaller scale, Yagul is an ancient Zapotec hillside fortress that is worth a visit for the breathtaking setting and vistas alone. 20 miles from Oaxaca on the road to Mitla.

Market Villages

Oaxaca is ringed by colorful villages known for their day market and unique crafts. Atzompa: Tuesday Market features dolls and green-glazed pottery. Etla: Wednesday Market features chocolate, mole and cheese. Zaachila: Thursday Market features livestock and food. Ocotlan: Friday Market features woven baskets and textiles. Oaxaca: On Saturday everyone comes into town for the Abastos Market, selling just about everything. Tlacolula: Sunday Market features something for everyone.

Guelatao

A two hour bus ride takes one through the high mountains outside of Oaxaca to the peaceful, serene village where Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian and legendary President of Mexico, was born. Buses leave from the various city terminals every two hours.
