Shopping in Oaxaca

Benito Juarez Market

A daily market for a big city, full of housewares, produce, flowers, chocolate, food vendors and a sizable display of crafts. Spills out into the surrounding streets. Addr: One block south of the Zocalo.

Abastos Market

Though open daily, on Saturday the market explodes with an almost overwhelming abundance of everything from food to crafts to livestock. Black pottery, green pottery, textiles, wood & metal products and every imaginable food item. Addr: Near the Second-Class Bus Terminal.

Mercado de Artesanias

For those who want to focus on textiles, this is the place. Items for sale surround weavers as they ply heir back-strap looms, creating their woven masterpieces. Open daily. Addr: Calles Garcia Virgil and Zaragoza.

Chocolate Mayordomo

Like so many of the chocolate manufacturers in Oaxaca, the array (and aroma) of chocolate and mole sauces in this shop are extraordinary. Open daily. Addr: 20 de Noviembre.

Oro de Monte Alban

The treasures of historic Monte Alban included delicate gold and silver filigreed jewelry that has been nicely duplicated at this shop. Addr: Palacio Santo Domingo.

Yalalog de Oaxaca

For a more serene setting to view crafts, this colonial mansion is a lovely back-drop for some of the more expensive samples of local workmanship. Addr: Alcala 104.
